North East Children Take Jubilee Flight

Newcastle International Airport and went above and beyond to give children from the region a day to remember. In celebration of the Diamond Jubilee year, over 100 children from the North East joined together to board an exclusive flight, LS2012.

Passengers were given a special sightseeing tour as they flew above the region’s most famous landmarks. The flight departed south towards County Durham before routing east and turning north up the coast above the stunning landscape of the Quayside and then Northumberland before returning back to Newcastle Airport.

The airport was honoured to welcome the Vice Lord Lieutenant who joined the party to mark Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee. In collaboration with the Lord Lieutenant’s office, passengers from Walbottle Village Primary School in Newcastle, Bede Community Primary in Gateshead, Dame Dorothy Primary School in Sunderland, Durham Trinity School & Sports College, North Tyneside Carers’ Centre, and children from Northumberland and South Tyneside celebrated in a British themed departure gate ahead of the flight with children’s entertainers, refreshments, and goody bags donated by airport partners WH Smiths, SSP, the Great British Sweet Shop, and Biza World Duty Free.

Dave Laws, Newcastle Airport's chief executive, said: “We wanted to celebrate the Jubilee by offering this exclusive flight to communities from within our local authority shareholder areas who haven’t had the opportunity to fly before, and we’re delighted that our airline partner has joined us in making this happen. We wanted to provide a positive experience for everyone involved to make the day a truly memorable occasion, and the team worked closely with the local councils to identify groups from each area. We have developed a first class relationship with, and we look forward to it growing in the future to the benefit of the people of the region.”
