Fowler Welch gets BRC Ambient ‘First’

FMCG supply-chain specialist, Fowler Welch, well-known for its chilled foods operation, has taken a significant step forward in its fast-emerging ambient business. The award of British Retail Consortium (BRC) has been accredited to its flagship Heywood location. Alongside long-standing BRC recognition of its chilled business, the globally-recognised standard now underscores best practice quality and safety procedures throughout the Heywood ambient operation. The Heywood certification also gives Fowler Welch BRC Accreditation at each of its 12 UK network locations.

Although the BRC Accreditation is not a legal requirement, Fowler Welch recognises the importance of setting a minimum quality standard by which it can satisfy customers who are increasingly looking for full traceability across their entire supply chain.

In terms of the scale of operation, Heywood provides an array of services for customers in the ambient food sector meeting retailer demands across multiple product categories on a seven day, Day One for Day Two basis. The BRC standard applies to all processes within the operation from goods inwards, administration, product audit, picking, stock control, Health & Safety and transport operations.

Paul Milnes, Head of Operations, Ambient, says BRC Accreditation provides a key differential for potential customers. “We have established a track-record of speed and efficiency in the chilled sector and want to bring many of the benefits, such as Day One for Day Two delivery, into the multi-category ambient arena,” he said. “So we’re delighted to have secured accreditation. Not only will it continue to provide re-assurance for our many existing customers, this BRC seal of approval will be of great interest to possible new ones.”
